日本の博士号にあたるものを英語圏では“Ph.D”と呼び、大学院で博士課程の単位を取得し、博士論文の審査に合格した者に授与される、名誉ある学位となっています。
その授与式には各国の色合いが出るようですが、なんとフィンランドではPh.D取得者に、「剣」と「シルクハット」が渡されるそうです。
普通の授与式では学位の証書が与えられるのですが、フィンランドはそれだけではなく、特別に博士の「シルクハット」と大学の印章と卒業式の年月日が埋め込まれた「剣」が与えられます。
とても印象深い授与式で誇りに思う気持ちは高まりそうですね。
